Saga Dawa Düchen: Sojong Vows & Green Tara Tsok
June 16 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pmFree
Saga Dawa Düchen, one of the 4 major Buddhist holidays, occurs on the full moon of the 4th Tibetan lunar month, which is called Saga Dawa in Tibetan. It celebrates the anniversaries of Buddha Shakyamuni’s birth, his enlightenment in Bodh Gaya at the age of 35, and his death at Kushinagara 45 years later.
We will celebrate the day before the full moon by reciting the Sojong, or one-day lay vows, at 9:30 am, then doing the Green Tara practice including Tsok (feast offering) at 10. Those taking the Sojong vows must have taken Refuge, whereas the Green Tara practice is open to all. (For more information on Sojong vows, see https://www.rigpawiki.org/index.php?title=One_day_lay_vows or email firstname.lastname@example.org with questions.)
The practice of Tsok or feast offering is a very powerful method for accumulating merit and wisdom and involves mentally offering food to all beings as vast as the sky–including ourselves! It will be integrated into our regular practice of the protectress Green Tara. We will bless offerings of food and drink, and celebrate them as possessing “thatness” (i.e. the true nature of reality), thus transforming our ordinary perceptions of the world into deep insight. Lama Nancy will explain what we are doing as we go through the practice. You may bring donations for the Tsok feast: vegetarian finger foods such as nuts, cookies, candy, chips, crackers, fruit, cheese, etc.
